Photographer Steve Sole is taking wedding photography to new heights with his company, Aerial Photography for You! His 6ft-wide, helium-filled balloon can fly silently to heights of 500ft carrying a digital camera whilst the telescopic mast can expand to 50ft, allowing Steve and his team to take pictures of virtually any event or location, even when normal access would be difficult. “It is an exciting business and it’s constantly expanding,” says Steve, who started specialising in this type of photography three years ago. “Recently, I acquired an altimeter for the balloon which means I can now photograph the view from a penthouse before the block has even been built!”
Steve has photographed a variety of subjects: Sir Elton John’s concert at Hove Cricket Ground; new apartments designed by the Terence Conran Group; Brighton Peace & Environment Centre’s ‘Make Trade Fair’ campaign as well as circus tents at the Brighton Festival and Herstmonceux Castle. There are many other uses for Steve’s unique close-up aerial photographs including estate agents’ brochures, golf courses and music concerts.
Specifically designed for a wedding is the group “heart shot”. Steve explains: “We mark the shape out on the ground and invite the bride and groom and all their guests to step inside. Once everybody’s in, it’s just a matter of looking up and saying cheese!” It’s not just hearts though – simple shapes like bells or entwined rings and even the happy couple’s initials can also be used. Informal shots of the arrival of the guests and the bride, incorporating the whole church or other venue, are also popular and in some circumstances the mast can even be utilised inside for the reception or even the ceremony itself.
